Delta

Ocean - River boundary

Overview

A sedimentary system composed of a series of sedimentary facies in delta at the river mouths facing to the sea. Deltas are classified to fluvial-dominated delta, wave-dominated delta, and tide-dominated delta. The fluvial-dominated delta has footprints shape of birds as Mississippi delta controlled by river currents. The wave-dominated delta has flat delta plain by wave erosions. The Tide-dominated delta has sand bars vertical to the seashore. The river on the delta is generally Braided river. Delta system is a basic structure formed at the boundary between a narrow water channel and a wider water pool. Variations of delta system is also known as bay-head delta, tidal delta of barrier islands, and Lacustrine delta.

Composed of prodelta sediments (massive silt), deltafront sediments (upward-coarsening sands), tidal flat sediments (finly interbedded sands and mud), fluvial sediments.
